Although Salt Lake City's dominant culture does not consume coffee drinks there is no shortage of excellent cafes to pick up a cup of coffee, catch some live local musicians, and pass away the afternoon. Here is a selection of the best coffee shops in Utah’s capital city.

Salt Lake City Roasting Company

Located at 320 East 400 South

The Salt Lake City Roasting Company, know as simply “The Roast” to locals, is definitely one of the most popular coffee shops in Salt Lake City. The Roast serves up a selection of 50 different styles of coffee selected and roasted by the company itself. Try a cup of coffee from an exotic region of the world along with one of The Roast’s incredibly amazing desserts.

The Roasting Company’s two-level modern styled cafe is a popular study place for college students and seats can be hard to find nearly every evening of the week. The Roast is open Monday through Saturday from 6:45am to midnight. Also visit the Roasting Company's new location a couple blocks away at Library Square.

Alchemy Coffee

Located at 390 East 1700 South, Salt Lake City

Alchemy has a great atmosphere with antique furniture, exposed brick, and local artist’s work decorating the walls - sort of like hanging out in an eccentric great aunts living room. Alchemy features live music on the weekends and an open mic on Tuesday nights.

The cafe serves Salt Lake Roasting Company Coffee as well as a variety of teas and non-caffeinated beverages. Alchemy features homemade soups, sandwiches, and a wide selection of locally made pastries and baked goods. Alchemy strives to serve locally produced goods and has plenty of vegan and gluten free options.

The Coffee Garden inside Sam Weller's Books Downtown Salt Lake City

Located at 254 Main Street, Salt Lake City

Located inside the labyrinth of Sam Weller’s new, used, and rare bookstore, the Coffee Garden offers up stellar espresso drinks, free wireless internet, and cozy seating arrangements. The Coffee Garden also has an outdoor service window which is great for grabbing a quick cup of coffee while waiting for Trax at the nearby train station or on the way to catch a free live music show during summer at the Gallivan Center.

Salt Lake City Coffee Break

Located at 430 East 400 South, Salt Lake City

The Salt Lake City Coffee Break can be rather peaceful in the morning but turns into a raging teen to early twenties scene in the late evening. The coffee shop has a nice outdoor patio that is heated with propane heaters during winter weekend nights. The spacious café offers up a wide selection of drinks and Mediterranean menu options along with the typical coffee shop fare of baked goods and desserts.

Toasters

Located at 151 West 200 South, Salt Lake City

Located conveniently across from Salt Lake’s Convention Center, the Salt Palace – Toasters serves an excellent cup of coffee and a good variety of breakfast baked goods. For lunch, Toasters also has tasty salads, soups, and sandwiches. The cute, artsy café is a great spot for convention goers and downtown business luncheons.

The Coffee Garden on 9th and 9th is great, too. It's a trendy hangout with great coffees, teas, and desserts. I love the classical music they play and the outdoor tables. Great ambiance.
